Quote of the Month
"Keep doing what you've always done and you'll always get what you've always gotten" ~Unknown
Have you heard this quote before? Whether you have or not, it is definitely one you want to keep in mind for batting anxiety.
Anxiety is an experience that requires certain action in order to reduce it. It also requires changes in belief systems and attitudes. Re-read the above quote right now and attach it to the action you've taken to handle the anxiety you experience. If you continue to do the same things that haven't worked before in reference to your anxiety, how can you expect your anxiety to decrease?
We often believe we can grow and make changes while residing in our comfort zone. Where does this belief originate from? I would imagine from our basic human tendency to seek pleasure and avoid pain.
With anxiety, we have got to turn the tables on this inclination and realize something very important:
There is no growth in comfort!
We only grow when out of our comfort zone. So, if you keep doing the same things that are in your comfort zone, how can you expect a different result? A result that actually helps you reduce your anxiety.
I think it was Einstein who said, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result".
Right now I urge you to consider all the things you have done so far to help reduce your anxiety. Have they gotten you the results you've wanted? If not, don't you think it's about time to do something different?
Has staying with the familiar brought you more confidence, greater calm and freedom?
At the risk of being redundant, I've got to tell you that you are not going to get the results you want without doing some new things, some different things, or some things that you know you should be doing even though they make you uncomfortable.
Of course, there are specific techniques and plans to be followed to truly help you get past your anxiety and fear. There are skills that you can learn to help you truly break free and provide you the ability to handle whatever anxiety comes your way in the future.
So, are you going to stay on the same path that, although smooth and well traversed, continues to lead you nowhere? Or, are you going to get off it and begin walking the path that, although littered with stones, holes, curves and thick brush, will get you to your destination?
You can do more than you ever thought possible.
